Devialet Phantom I: live gig in the living room
by David Lee
Huawei has revised its FreeBuds Pro. The second generation of the True Wireless headphones promises improved active noise cancellation and Devialet sound.
The FreeBuds Pro 2 look like their predecessors, but they have some new features. In Istanbul, Huawei recently unveiled its latest True Wireless model alongside new smartphones and laptops.
According to the Chinese manufacturer, it has improved the Active Noise Cancelling. Up to 47 decibels (dB) can now be compensated. With the predecessor it was 40 dB. Noise cancellation is provided by three built-in microphones per earpiece, which record the sound of the environment and thus enable targeted countermeasures.
As with the predecessor, passive noise cancellation is provided by the design with silicone attachments.
For better sound, the manufacturer states that a dual-speaker system is built into the individual earphones. And thanks to dynamic drivers with four magnets and a diameter of 11 millimeters, the FreeBuds 2 are said to be able to reproduce frequencies from 15 Hz to 50 kHz. The sound has also been optimized by Devialet's audio experts, according to Huawei.
Devialet is a French audio technology company that manufactures speakers and amplifiers.
Huawei relies on a new Bluetooth 5.2 chip. This is supposed to support Sony's LDAC codec and enable a shorter latency of 140 milliseconds. LDAC enables a transmission of up to 990 kbit/s with a sampling depth of 16 bits at 48 kilohertz.
Huawei specifies the battery life for the FreeBuds Pro 2 with up to 4.5 hours with noise cancelling turned on. It is supposed to be 7 hours without active noise cancelling. By comparison, the predecessor model lasted 5 hours with ANC. And the AirPods Pro from Apple also have a runtime of 4.5 hours.
The Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 are supposed to be on the market in Europe from July 11 and will be available in the colors "silver frost", "ceramic white" and "silver blue". So far, only the price for the German market has been specified, which is 199 Euros. As soon as the Swiss price is known, it will be added here.
Testing devices and gadgets is my thing. Some experiments lead to interesting insights, others to demolished phones. I’m hooked on series and can’t imagine life without Netflix. In summer, you’ll find me soaking up the sun by the lake or at a music festival.
