As a long-time user of the EF 50mm f/1.8 II, I had to have this updated version immediately. Not everything has been tested in detail yet, but at first glance (after 3 weeks) you can say that the price performance is right.
I always had my old EF 50mm f/1.8 II with me because it was light and small. It delivered sharp images, you could also focus somewhat manually and it had a large aperture (compare with any zoom lens). Bokeh was so-so, but at that price....
At the old EF 50mm f/1.8 II, however, the following things bothered me from the beginning: 1. the loud and slow AF motor, 2. the really very cheap processing (still ok, at the price), 3. the AF-MF switch (no AF override) and after 2 years the lens no longer focused properly. Even calibrating could not fix the focus error because it was not reproducible.
Now for the new EF 50mm f/1.8 STM: 1. Quiet and very fast AF motor, 2. workmanship feels higher quality, bayonet mount is now made of metal, 3. manual focus goes directly, but only as long as you keep the shutter button half pressed. The manual focus, is not mechanical but motor-controlled (fly-by-wire). I personally don't like it very much, but it works. 4. AF problems I have not had. 5. I have noticed stronger vignetting, compared to the old lens. 6. bokeh should also be nicer, because the aperture has 7 segments according to the specification (only 5 as with the old version). This I have not yet compared.
All in all: the performance far exceeds the price. The ideal lens to take with you everywhere. Ideally suited for the first attempts with fixed focal lengths.
Used the lens on the Canon 5D Mk2, 7D and 550D.

Great, in the portraits of my son the rest of the family disappears wonderfully in the blur.
