2-in-1 notebooks While a few years ago, desktop PCs were the only choice, today’s selection ranges from tablets and phablets to smartphones and notebooks. Each of these devices has specific advantages and disadvantages, which ultimately means the average person in Switzerland has more than one of these types of computers. But when it comes down to it, the growing number of devices doesn’t just mean more work; owning several devices costs us more, too. Renowned manufacturers of the likes of Intel and Microsoft responded to this trend with 2-in-1 notebooks. These devices feature rotating, folding, sliding and clicking mechanisms so you can switch between tablet and regular notebook mode whenever you like.
Business notebooks In a business environment, there are higher demands on security, productivity and reliability than in the private sphere. Therefore, business notebooks tend to be more durable and are known for the enhanced manufacturer support that comes with them (for example, driver support). They boast more resistant housing, a good range of interfaces and improved administrative functions thanks to Windows Pro. But what’s most important when it comes to business notebooks is security. Examples of security features of business devices include better basic warranty coverage (including expansion options), drive encryption, physical theft protection, fingerprint reader, Trusted Platform Module (TPM) and smart card reader.
Home office notebooks If you intend to use your notebook mostly for things like checking the SBB timetable, writing letters and having a look at the weather forecast, a home office device is ideal for you. These starter devices deliver enough performance for everyday tasks without breaking the bank. They’re known for their fairly large screens and computing power that’s good enough to run common programmes without stalling. On top of this, they’re robust and usually have a good range of interfaces for connecting peripheral devices (printer, mouse, speakers, etc.).
Multimedia notebooks Who doesn’t recognise this scenario: you’re enjoying some well-deserved holiday, taking photos and filming to see what your new camera can do. You’ve got all your memories captured. Now all you have to do is remove that belly with Photoshop and edit the footage for your next YouTube video. The only problem is your GoPro Camera records in 4k and your old notebook doesn’t have the computing power to edit the media files. As camera resolution and system requirements on photo editing software increase, so too must computing power. Multimedia notebooks close the gap between affordable home office devices and gaming systems with high-end graphics power.
Gaming notebooks Gaming notebooks are the front runners in terms of processor and graphics performance. These are the devices that get tech enthusiasts going. Gaming laptops usually feature eye-catching design with adaptable lighting and keyboard layout. But these devices are about more than just their looks; they also stand out for: plenty of memory, super-fast processors, high-end graphics performance and maximum screen quality.
Portable notebooks Portable notebooks are specially designed to meet today's mobility needs. All the notebooks in this category have two main features in common: lightweight design (≤ 1.5 kg) and screen diagonal no larger than 13.3 inches, making them practical and easy to pack into your bag. Another advantage is their low energy consumption. A full battery lasts up to an entire day, depending on how much you use your portable device.
If you mainly use your notebook to check the SBB timetable, write a letter or check the weather from time to time, then a home office device is the best solution. These entry-level devices offer sufficient performance for everyday tasks without exceeding the budget. Characteristics of these devices are that they have a relatively large screen and offer enough computing power to run common programs smoothly. They are also robustly manufactured and generally have a good variety of interfaces for connecting peripherals (printer, mouse, loudspeakers, etc.). Special attention is also paid to the design of the keyboard. For example, a separate number pad can greatly increase productivity in everyday life.

The thermal design power (TDP), sometimes called thermal design point, refers to the maximum amount of power the cooling system in a computer is required to dissipate. For example, a laptop's CPU cooling system may be designed for a 20 watt TDP, which means that it can dissipate up to 20 watts of heat without exceeding the maximum junction temperature for the computer chip. It can do this using an active cooling method such as a fan or any of the three passive cooling methods, convection, thermal radiation or conduction. Typically, a combination of methods is used. The TDP is typically not the most power the chip could ever draw, such as by a power virus, but rather the maximum power that it would draw when running "real applications". This ensures the computer will be able to handle essentially all applications without exceeding its thermal envelope, or requiring a cooling system for the maximum theoretical power (which would cost more but in favor of extra headroom for processing power).
A multi-core processor (or chip-level multiprocessor, CMP) combines two or more independent cores (normally a CPU) into a single package composed of a single integrated circuit (IC), called a die, or more dies packaged together. A dual-core processor contains two cores, and a quad-core processor contains four cores.
A video card, video adapter, graphics accelerator card, display adapter, or graphics card is an expansion card which generates output images to a display. Most video cards offer added functions, such as accelerated rendering of 3D scenes and 2D graphics, video capture, TV-tuner adapter, MPEG-2/MPEG-4 decoding, FireWire, light pen, TV output, or the ability to connect multiple monitors (multi-monitor). Other modern high performance video cards are used for more graphically demanding purposes, such as PC games.
Nvidia is an American global technology company based in Santa Clara, California. Nvidia manufactures graphics processing units (GPUs), as well as having a significant stake in manufacture of system-on-a-chip units (SOCs) for the mobile computing market. Nvidia and chief rival AMD Graphics Technologies (formerly ATI Technologies) have dominated the high performance GPU market, pushing other manufacturers to smaller, niche roles.

Secure Digital (SD) is a flash (non-volatile) memory card format developed by Matsushita, SanDisk, and Toshiba for use in portable devices. Today it is widely used in digital cameras, handheld computers, PDAs, mobile phones, GPS receivers, and video game consoles. SD card capacities range from 8 MB to 2 GB and from 4 GB to 32 GB for SDHC cards as of 2008.
The Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) format, defined in Version 2.0 of the SD specification, supports cards with capacities up to 32 GB. The SDHC trademark is licensed to ensure compatibility.
At the Consumer Electronics Show 2009, the SD Card Association announced the successor to SDHC. The specification of the SDXC (SD eXtended Capacity) cards allows a gross size of up to 2 TB (2,048 GB). The division into performance classes is maintained and now reaches up to 104 MB/s, 300 MB/s are planned. Microsoft's exFAT, optimized for flash memory, is often used as the file system.
Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a serial bus standard to interface devices. USB was designed to allow many peripherals to be connected using a single standardized interface socket and to improve the plug-and-play capabilities by allowing devices to be connected and disconnected without rebooting the computer (hot swapping). Other convenient features include providing power to low-consumption devices without the need for an external power supply and allowing many devices to be used without requiring manufacturer specific, individual device drivers to be installed. The Mini-B, Micro-A, Micro-B , and Micro-AB connectors are used for smaller devices such as PDAs, mobile phones or digital cameras. The Standard-A plug is approximately 4 by 12 mm, the Standard-B approximately 7 by 8 mm, and the Micro-A and Micro-B plugs approximately 2 by 7 mm.
The High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is a compact audio/video connector interface for transmitting uncompressed digital streams. It represents a digital alternative to consumer analog standards such as Radio Frequency (RF) coaxial cable, composite video, S-Video, SCART, component video, D-Terminal, and VGA.

The new 802.11ac standard is to be adopted in 2013. The main advantage over 802.11n is the faster data transmission with a gross data rate of up to 6900 Mbps. Net, however, good devices achieve three times as many as 3-stream MiMO devices. Data transmission is exclusively in the 5 GHz band and requires a larger channel width of 80 MHz, optionally a channel width of 160 MHz.
A lithium-ion battery (sometimes Li-ion battery or LIB) is a member of a family of rechargeable battery types in which lithium ions move from the negative electrode to the positive electrode during discharge and back when charging. Li-ion batteries use an intercalated lithium compound as the electrode material, compared to the metallic lithium used in non-rechargeable lithium battery.
