Yes, you can do that. I also have 2x WD80EFAX and 2x WD80EFZX Raid 5 installed in a Synology DS918+ and it runs great.
No one can tell you about actions in advance
It is best to give your feedback and product wishes directly to the customer service. Here in the community, things like that often get lost. PS: Otherwise, try placing several orders.
No, the 8TB is not SMR (even with the EFAX in the model name). Only the 2 to 6 TB with EFAX are SMR. Western Digital has meanwhile written a statement on their blog with a table that provides an exact overview: https://blog.westerndigital.com/wd-red-nas-drives/
Yes, of course it works. This is a bit of an operation, since the plate is actually designed for continuous operation, but it still works without any problems.
Since the model number alone does not indicate if it is helium filled or not, and stock may vary and by different suppliers, your best bet would be to actually order the product and check it yourself. From the following reddit thread the later models (probably current stock) should be air filled again. -> https://www.reddit.com/r/homelab/comments/ba1mdt/which_wd_drives_are_helium/
Why is the 8TB variant specified with 8.8W power consumption and the 10 and 4GB variant with 5.xW???
Good day Hard disks have different characteristics depending on the type; type & year of manufacture, throughput, functions, and ventilation (quiet/loud) and thus different power consumption. The 8TB is also heavier than the 10TB, which speaks for itself. Greetings
Seems to be limited during the promotion.
I also have an 8TB drive in a Synology and I only hear the normal whirring of the hard drives. I don't hear a noise like the one you describe. I would take a look at the SMART values and otherwise RMA.
Unfortunately, you cannot correct anything here. Error 198 shows you that the hardware has problems that cannot be corrected and you can therefore make a claim under the warranty. The easiest way is to take a screenshot of the SMART overview with the errors (the serial number of the disc should be visible on it), print it out and enclose it with the disc if you want to return it. Normally you will get a replacement immediately.
