I came from an iPhone 6S and found the switch away from the home button totally uncomplicated. After a few days, the new gestures have already become a habit. The performance in everyday applications, and also in games, is excellent.
Actually, I would give the XS five stars - if it weren't for the exorbitant price (just about bearable with a contract extension). And what I will never understand is Apple's unspeakable move to ban the RCA headphone jack. Completely unnecessary money-making with the accessories.

I am extremely satisfied with the device. The display can be read in the most blinding sunlight, photos look really fantastic on it and to my own surprise, the notch doesn't bother me at all. It's not really much bigger than my previous 6[s], so the size doesn't bother me much. The weight due to the glass, on the other hand, takes some getting used to, especially during longer phone calls where you hold the device in one hand or when taking selfies with an outstretched arm, you can actually feel the extra weight in your fingers.
But my reason for buying it was the camera capability. The camera with the 32 per cent bigger sensor is absolutely amazing compared to the 6[s]. I didn't realise that a phone today could take photos like that in low light. I was able to take really good photos of the family Christmas with only the Christmas tree lights on. However, only still motifs, children in motion in this light can only be captured with an SLR and ISO 6400. After all these years of using a wide-angle fixed focal length on my smartphone, I really appreciate the zoom lens! Never thought how tight I need it. The Smart HDR is amazing - even in panoramic photos against the sun I can see the front of the person really well. So in terms of camera technology, I hit the bull's eye. There is one exception:
The artificial portrait depth-of-field effect still needs a lot of software improvement. In ideal light, it works to some extent, but often only the face is sharp. At first glance, the photos look really good, but an experienced photographer can see immediately that it's not real. Especially with curly hair or dynamic body movements. The portrait mode is meeeega slow and often the distance is not right for the software. The algorithm almost can't handle objects at all, so it still needs improvement. But we're talking about a smartphone camera here - it's complaining at an ultra-high level.
As for the rest: the phone is simply the absolute nonplusultra in terms of workmanship! I'm an engineer myself, and putting together something made of glass and stainless steel with such precision is a work of engineering art.
Enough of the bows in this regard, the missing jack is rarely annoying, but when it is, it's really annoying! Home party at a friend's house, you're the only one with an Apple Music subscription and you want to play a good playlist on the old top hi-fi system that doesn't have Bluetooth - no way. In these situations, you certainly do NOT have the overpriced adapter with you... The lack of a jack is simply a shame!
I don't have to say anything about the price, because even after several weeks I still ask myself whether I was insane to spend more than a thousand francs on a smartphone. But in general, [s]-Phones have always been the best, longest-lasting iPhones. So hopefully I'll enjoy it for a long time.
