Never again a device from Drobo - the warranty service is sub-standard.

The device is very good and fully met my expectations in terms of functionality. But unfortunately, the warranty services of this manufacturer are completely unacceptable. I have been waiting for the replacement or repair of the device for more than two months. After this extremely negative service experience, I will never buy a device from Drobo again.

Drobo has been doing what it should for two years

I bought this because I was tired of having to deal with external hard drives or overly complicated Linux-based NAS. For my extensive media collection and terrabytes of high-resolution images, I decided on 5x10TB and set it up as a Raid. Disk exchange during operation without problems. Performance naturally goes down. Access via TB is like Schmidt's cat and loading/saving via Photoshop etc. doesn't give you a chance to look in the mailbox at the same time. Click-and-whoosh, just the way I like it. What's annoying is the high noise level, which might discourage sensitive ears from buying it. Since the device also transmits via WLAN, it can easily be placed next to the router in the cabinet. However, I only use it for studio recordings when the camera sends the images directly to the NSA. It works as long as you have/keep your WLAN optimised and you don't shoot series with a very high cadence (> 5pic/sec at full-frame(35mPixel).

For my (and most) purposes, there is nothing better.

There are beautiful and detailed tests of this device on the net, so here is just a brief summary of the most important:
    - Mechanically solidly built, the housing including the frame is made of sheet steel (in contrast to
Synology's plastic), so noise when accessing the hard drives is quite quiet.
    - Works very reliably and with almost all hard disks, even of different sizes, only archive hard disks with SMR recording are not recommended.
    - Slightly slower (10-15 %) than e.g. Synology when copying data, probably due to the complicated file system. It is therefore not worth equipping the device with expensive high-performance hard disks.
    - The number of apps and functions is rather limited compared to QNAP and Synology, but the most important things are available, so research before buying whether the device fits the intended purpose. Unsurpassed as a file storage and media server.
    - Fan not exactly quiet, made in China, audible when placed in living room. Replacement with an almost noiseless fan is possible on one's own, but unfortunately associated with loss of warranty.
    - In the event of a hardware defect, data on the HDDs can only be read out with a Drobo, so the purchase of a second Drobo is almost mandatory (but unfortunately not available at present).
    - Uninterruptible power supply is integrated (!), in case of a power failure the unit shuts down properly.
    - In contrast to other NAS, management is not via web access, but via its own app.
    - The latest firmware supports 802.3ad port bonding.
    - Everything very simple and foolproof (made in USA) :)

    Pro

    • Sturdy housing
    • UPS integrated, justifies the higher price
    • Advanced file system (file-based)
    • Almost every hard disk is accepted

    Contra

    • Few apps and functions
    • Fan audible
    • The manufacturer has problems, is currently no longer delivering
