    Recommended as a travel zoom

I am very happy with the lens. It's a big improvement on the Nikkor 16-85mm I had before.
It's brilliant as a travel zoom for always on. Really wide angle and sensational vibration reduction mode!
    The corners of the image
could be a little sharper though. The distortion doesn't bother me, because I calculate it out with DXO software anyway.

    super lens for DX

Super great lens. Fast, sharp, great technologies such as nanocrystal coating, electromagnetic aperture control (attention, only the newer DSLRs can do this, otherwise you shoot with open aperture) and light. The advantage that it is light goes hand in hand with the choice of material from which the lens is made. It is not made of robust magnesium like a good camera body or lens. Nevertheless, the workmanship is impeccable and top-notch. Similar to a Nikon AF-S DX VRII 18-200mm or Nikon AF-S 70-300mm, f/4.5-5.6G VR, so I am satisfied.
The price is steep, but Nikon sells it as a top DX lens with new features and a gold ring. But it's worth it to me.

The truly perfect DX standard zoom from Nikon

I waited a long time, also because of the high price, but in the end I bought Nikon's AF-S VR DX 16-80mm after all. Due to the compact size, the lens feels very valuable and "tight". The zoom ring runs cleanly over the entire focal length, focusing is quick and silent.

The lens hood is very special: an angular basic shape, with better characteristics than those of the other DX zooms: firm, solid and, in comparison, much more elaborately manufactured, plus with an interesting detail, namely a release button. The fact that the aperture locks better and is only released by pressing the button means that it also holds better if you hit something with the aperture.

And what about the optics? After all, you don't buy a lens just to fiddle with it, but to take pictures. I was curious because the test reports on the net ranged from pure euphoria to very critical statements.

In short: I am absolutely satisfied. Absolutely, because the image quality is perfect for a very good mid-range zoom. Of course, the distortion at wide angle is severe, and of course there is colour fringing in details with high contrast at the edges, but these are all things that are either already fixed in the camera (for those who shoot in jpg) or at the latest in Lightroom with a click of the mouse. Sharpness, resolution and the general impression of the image are exactly what I expected for all the money.

In addition, the perfect focal length range: 16mm (corresponding to 24mm in FX) is simply necessary for travelling, and the 80mm at the other end, corresponding to 120mm in FX, is enough for a good crop or even a nice portrait.

The lens therefore meets my requirements perfectly. It is expensive, there is no question about that, but you get an all-round zoom for your money that also meets very high demands and still remains compact and "travel-ready".

    Pro

    • Excellent picture quality
    • Compact, but high quality
    • Very effective VR mechanism (approx. 4 f-stops)
    • Great focal length range from wide angle to portrait telephoto
    • Fast with aperture 2.8 - 4
    • Better than all kit lenses, better also than all third-party zooms

    Contra

    • Relatively expensive (but you also get something for your money)
