A good all-rounder with usable ANC and few quirks

After I had 2x bad luck with the "super model" from Sony (crackling, ambient noise unusable), I decided on the basis of a YouTube review for this "flying under the radar" ANC model from Panasonic. And to anticipate: everything works here.

The headphones fit a bit tightly and are considerably heavier than the popular and highly praised Sony model, but the three-stage ANC is usable and differences can actually be detected that - depending on where you wear them - make perfect sense.

The sound of the headphones is rich, clear, detailed, but changes in NC mode and each stage seems to have its own sound profile. In wired mode, it sounds even better. However, it lacks a bit of "space

Passively, it does let some sound through via the microphones and even on the cable, NC can be used without Bluetooth by switching on the headphones.

At the highest level of ANC, the HD605N can't keep up with the current Sony (and probably also Bose) (even the faulty Sony really had extremely good noise cancelling at work at the highest level), but it's actually not bad and allows music or audio book enjoyment without having to turn up the volume of the audio tracks. The slight noise is okay (not noticeable with music anyway).

Edit: the performance of the ANC deteriorated significantly over time and did not improve after a factory reset.

The workmanship seems good, as there is no creaking or cracking when walking.

In LDAC mode, I sometimes have Bluetooth interruptions with the phone in my backpack, but as soon as you switch to aptX, the connection is more stable, but unfortunately still not perfect.

As I said, the sound is very good, but I miss an app or an equaliser that would support the device's own EQ. And through which you could perhaps make necessary updates available. Sony is really top in that respect.

The controls are OK. The volume rocker is almost too sensitive and you often mistakenly turn the volume up or down when pressing the multifunction button that is also integrated there.

The integrated "voice" that confirms actions is unfortunately horribly tinny and shrill. Google Assistant works.

All in all, a good pair of headphones that can't quite keep up with the best (if they work), but do a good job and don't really do anything wrong. However, the NC performance of my model deteriorated over the weeks.

    The price/performance ratio is right.

PS: I can't really say anything about the telephony (yet)...not used for it so far.

    Pro

    • Good, neutral sound
    • Three-stage ANC works well
    • No creaking and cracking
    • All BT codecs available (LDAC, aptX, aptXHD, etc.)
    • NC also with cable/jack
    • Battery life OK
    • Simple operation

    Contra

    • Sits a little tight
    • Connection is interrupted more often than average when the phone is in my pocket. With LDAC actively bad
    • Passive insulation poor
    • No app
    • Bad integrated voice that is just annoying
    • The performance of the noise cancelling system deteriorated significantly over the weeks

For the price, these are certainly very good headphones, but I would probably invest more next time. Definitely worth it if you have high expectations.

Meets all specifications, Bluetooth and NC flawless. Fits well, soft ear cushion, no pressure on the ears. Bass nice and rich but not overbearing, mid-range tones crystallise clearly. The treble could be a bit tighter, vocals don't come through enough for my taste.

    Pro

    • Authentic sound

    Contra

    • Treble somewhat pale

    Technically ok, processing miserable

Technically, the device is okay: runtime ok, sound is right, noise cancelling produces a fine hiss, which is only audible during pauses.

But: the workmanship of the ear cups is miserable. A good 1 year after purchase, the
leatherette edging came off the fixed part for the second time, after a warranty repair after the first six months. This can happen once, but it's a no-go that it happens again after a repair in the same amount of time.
