    Multimedia lovers will be delighted. The NAS does not reach its limits - even when 10 people are transcoding a 4K film at the same time via PLEX! TOP

    More is not possible. And this is my fourth NAS. And definitely the fastest (including RAM expansion). I previously had the DS110, then DS110+, DS2016j and DS216play - and all quickly reached their computing limits. The DS718+, however - I can recommend to anyone who has a heavy data load (external access, multiple synchronous CloudSync tasks, Plex streaming with multiple users, etc). So far I have not been able to push the NAS to the limit. GREAT!

    My first NAS, I would buy again

    The 718+ could be set up in less than 30 minutes with the help of the youtube video "Synology DiskStation setup (complete) from A to Z | iDomiX". Since it is my first NAS device, I do not have a comparison. However, I can report a very simple and problem-free initial setup.
    I currently use the NAS for storage and as a media server for Plex. Unfortunately, the version of Plex that can be downloaded from the Synology Package Center does not support hardware transcoding. To enable hardware transcoding you need a Plex Pass and manually download the 64bit Plex version from the plex homepage. For more information, Google "Getting Plex with Hardware Encoding running on Synology DiskStation DS918+ and DS718+ NAS".

    • Plex supports hardware transcoding in the 64bit version (Plex Pass only)

    Contra

    • If you want to have Plex hardware transcoding you have to install and update Plex manually.

    Excellent NAS - highly recommended!

    A highly recommendable NAS with extensive software! For example, a free backup of the O365 environment or Microsoft VMs is possible even for companies. Throughput is also sufficient. RAM is possible and recommendable with inexpensive HyperX Impact (1x, 8GB, DDR3-1866, SODIMM 204). Workmanship very good and disk removal/replacement is possible during operation without problems. Only virtual machines run very slowly on the NAS - the processor is too slow for this (one star deduction). Otherwise, full 5 stars!
