    Recommendation

I use the product to provide documents and media within my home network. So far I am very satisfied with it.

My reason for choosing the DS918+ was the SSD cache. I would choose it again.

    I currently have 2 x WD Red
(non-PRO) in RAID 1, more HDDs will be added later. (This reduces both the energy consumption and the probability of four HDDs from the same production batch).

    Tips:
    - Device needs power (in the order of sFr. 30.- per year in 24/7 operation).
    - RAID is not a backup strategy; make additional (on- and offsite) backups!
    - M.2 WRITE cache requires two M.2 SSDs. Read cache gets by with one M.2 SSD
    - Parity RAIDs (e.g. RAID 5 and RAID 6) have worse write performance than Mirror RAIDs (e.g. RAID 1 and RAID 10)
    - RAID level can be changed later (see spec on Synology homepage) (e.g. [2 Drives in RAID1] -> [3 Drives in RAID 5] -> [4 Drives in RAID 5])

Update on the missing dust filter (after approx. 1.5 years of continuous operation):

My unit is mounted under a table - i.e. approx. 50 cm from the floor. I cannot make any meaningful quantitative statement about the amount of dust. However, I would have expected more dust and do not miss the dust filter.

    Pro

    • Supplied software
    • Performance
    • Processing quality
    • Expandable with M.2 SSD cache (I have done this, I am very satisfied with the result)
    • Expandable with more RAM (I have not done this, 4 GB is enough for me)

    Contra

    • No dust filter (I'm curious to see what the unit looks like after a year of operation)
