Is it possible that the pen cannot be charged with this keyboard? Do I really have to choose between fingerprint and charging the pen?

Yes, this keyboard cannot be used to charge the Surface Pen. Only the Surface Slim Pen can be charged via the keyboard, but you will need this keyboard: Microsoft Surface Pro X & Pro 8 Signature Keyboard & Surface Slim Pen (CH, Docking)
