During Virginia Woolf's lifetime, only one volume of short prose was published, namely 'Monday or Tuesday'. It contained eight stories. Until the publication of the volume now available in German (released in London in 1985, with an expanded edition in 1989), only 21 of Virginia Woolf's stories were available in English. This edition contains 46 stories and sketches, of which 28 had never been translated into German before. It brings together all the short prose published by her and her husband Leonard Woolf from her estate, as well as all unpublished pieces. The collection is arranged chronologically, offering readers new insights into Virginia Woolf's literary development. In the stories, the author experiments with narrative methods, themes, and even individual characters, such as Mrs. Dalloway, whom she later reuses in her novels.
