The Psalms are the most important prayer of Christians and were explained by almost all great theologians in the early church. In this third volume, "The Psalms in the Church Fathers," the richness of patristic interpretation of the Psalms for Psalms 61-90 is to be highlighted. For the Church Fathers, engaging with "the Scriptures," i.e., the Old Testament, is not primarily about understanding texts but about understanding the salvific will of God. This salvific will has been revealed anew and surprisingly in Jesus Christ. When the Fathers read the Old Testament, they hear in it the word of God spoken into their presence, showing them who Jesus is and who they themselves are as the Church. In the Gospel of Luke, it is said that after the resurrection, Jesus tells his disciples: "Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms. Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures" (Luke 24:44-45). The Fathers allow Jesus to hand them the Psalms and strive to understand what each verse means in relation to him and his Church. Some of their statements may sound anti-Semitic to our ears and were likely intended that way in the disputes of their time. Today, a respectful interpretation of Scripture concerning Israel must make it clear that it is legitimate for Jews and Christians to understand the same biblical books differently, meaning that the Jewish understanding remains valid, while the texts are multiperspective and can and must be read in the Church from the perspective of the Christ event.
