With the rise of seaside resorts in the Wilhelminian Empire, bathhouse antisemitism also emerged. "Jew-free!" was the slogan along the Baltic Sea, long before the Nazi state became a reality. As early as 1900, Jewish newspapers published lists of resorts warning against places where Jewish visitors were unwelcome. Conversely, places like Heringsdorf were considered "Jewish baths," where a liberal atmosphere initially prevailed. Drawing from a wealth of unpublished archival materials and largely forgotten historical sources, diary entries, letters, and travel reports from Jewish bathhouse elites, Kristine von Soden paints a multifaceted picture of beach life during that era up to 1937, when nearly all locations and beaches were forbidden to Jewish bathers. Updated and expanded with numerous documents specifically related to Warnemünde and Kühlungsborn, as well as impressive new illustrations, the author has created a standard work that is both literary in style and scientifically grounded.
