3 situations in which you should wait to brush your teeth

Brushing your teeth quickly after chocolate to prevent tooth decay: according to a dentist, this could actually be counterproductive. Find out why you should sometimes wait until later to scrub your teeth.
Freshly brushed teeth do a lot for your well-being. But not always for dental health: to avoid damage, it is sometimes better to wait before scrubbing. A London dentist recently explained this on her Instagram channel @dr.shaadi.manouchehri - and probably surprised quite a few people. In her video, Dr. Shaadi Manouchehri advises allowing half an hour or an hour to pass before reaching for the toothbrush in the following situations:
- after vomiting (30 to 60 minutes)
- after eating breakfast (30 to 60 minutes)
- after snacking (60 minutes)
Brushing your teeth distributes the acid
The reason: Immediately after eating or spitting, your mouth contains a lot of acid. This is caused by the regurgitated stomach acid when vomiting and by bacteria breaking down the sugar when snacking. If you use your toothbrush at that moment, you spread the acid over the individual teeth where it could attack the plaque. And you're not doing your teeth any favours.
By the way: Dr Manouchehri also answers the question of whether you should brush your teeth before or after breakfast: "Preferably before or wait 30-60 minutes after". So preferably before breakfast or alternatively afterwards after waiting at least half an hour.
Mouthwash helps to bridge the gap
The doctor also has a little tip for the waiting time: If you can't stand the unpleasant taste in your mouth for long enough - especially after vomiting - you can use a mouthwash. This will keep your mouth fresh until you can finally use your toothbrush. If you want to stock up your bathroom cabinet, you will of course find what you are looking for in the shop.
