Things that bug me about my make-up products

It’s small details that annoy me about my cosmetics. On top of that, the prices are going up.

Seriously? There are certain things about my beauty products that I find absolutely superfluous – from packaging to formula. Honestly, the manufacturers could just ditch these «extras» altogether. Here come three features I could do without.

The «free» brush

Have you ever thought, «Nice, they’ve even included a brush – I’m sold.»? So have I. But these days, I find free brushes in eyeshadow palettes – even the double-ended ones – sheer mockery. If I’m buying a palette of eyeshadow colours and textures, I’ll also need the right tools to apply them properly. In other words, a single, low-quality brush feels about as professional as using your fingertip.

But maybe you’re thinking of people who might embrace a bit of a jump-start when it comes to brushes. And that’s a valid point. The only fly in the ointment is that beginners won’t benefit from these types of brushes either, as their performance usually leaves a lot to be desired – too fluffy, too hard, too whatever. Even professionals would struggle with them. It’s a tool that can make the fun of applying make-up soon turn sour.

The only thing worse than brushes in eyeshadow palettes are wide, flat brushes added to cheek blush or bronzers. Their shape isn’t functional and encourages incorrect handling. What’s more, the hairs are usually stiff and very tightly tied. This makes the brush pick up a lot of powder, so achieving a streak-free, soft application is quite the struggle. Again, I think manufacturers should revisit the «on the go» idea behind this concept. Personally, I chuck these tools immediately. So why not get rid of this cost driver – the brush only appears to be free anyway – and lower the price of the product instead?

Unwanted freshness

For a long time, it was the industry standard. Especially for glossy lip products and lip plumpers: the mint fragrance. While I find it tolerable when I’m brushing my teeth or chewing gum, it weirds me out when I’m putting on my make-up. The overpowering perfume and cooling effect make my lips feel strange. I’d prefer no fragrance at all. Fortunately, the trend in liquid lip products is now leaning towards fruity or vanilla.

Mini me

Mirror, mirror in my hand, who’s the most unnecessary packaging item in this land? «Single Shadows» is. These individual eyeshadows are so small and compact it makes me wonder: why do make-up manufacturers think they should cram in a mini mirror? After all, four square centimetres is just enough to reflect my iris.

This mini mirror is impractical. The paper clip next to it is for size comparison.

Ok, ok, I may be exaggerating. But there's something claustrophobic about using small mirrors. You can see a bit, but it’s not enough. Plus it feels really restricting when you’re trying to apply make-up while straining your eyes looking into the minute mirror. I doubt consumers actually use this extra feature. Even seasoned travellers are likely to opt for a slightly more comfortable hand mirror.

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
