Canon launches two new compact cameras and a lens. The Canon PowerShot G5 II performs significantly better than its predecessor and is even more compact. The G7 X III is geared towards the needs of vloggers and the new lens is designed as a travelling companion.

Canon has unveiled two new compact cameras: The PowerShot G5 X II and G7 X III. As with the large Canon cameras, the same applies here: The lower the number, the more high-class the model. The G5 X II is therefore the better and more expensive device than the G7 X III.

Both cameras have a stacked sensor with 1 inch and 20 megapixels. They work with the latest image processor from Canon (Digic 8). Both devices can also save images in the new RAW format CR3 and record videos in 4K.

G5 X II: pocketable, more telephoto and much faster

The G5 X II looks very different to its predecessor. This is partly due to the viewfinder. It can now be fully retracted into the housing, which makes the camera much more compact. You probably know this from Sony's RX100 series.

The lens now extends from 24 to 120 mm instead of just 100 mm. Nevertheless, the light intensity in the telephoto range remains at f/2.8.

The G5 X II makes the most progress in terms of continuous shooting speed. With fixed autofocus, it manages 20 images per second, for a short time (burst mode) even 30. With tracking autofocus, it is still 8 images per second. The predecessor only managed 4.4 fps.

G7 X III: A vlogger camera

Canon has fully customised the G7 X III to the needs of vloggers. This includes a microphone input and the option to start live streams directly from the camera. If you're worried about battery life when streaming: the G7 X III can not only be charged via USB, but can also be supplied with USB power during operation.

New universal zoom lens for mirrorless

Canon has finalised the RF 24-240mm lens for the mirrorless System R. The tenx zoom is designed as a compact travelling companion. At 750 grams, it is relatively light. The downside of this is that the speed is only f/4 to f/6.3, which can be partially compensated for by a built-in 5-axis image stabiliser.

A wide-angle lens (15-35 mm) and a classic telephoto lens (70-200 mm) for the R system are also due to be released this year.

My interest in IT and writing landed me in tech journalism early on (2000). I want to know how we can use technology without being used. Outside of the office, I’m a keen musician who makes up for lacking talent with excessive enthusiasm.
