This requires a smartphone, which in turn must have a GPS receiver and can thus receive, process and forward the signal to the fitness tracker or watch.

Connected GPS means that the watches connect to the mobile phone and measure the GPS via it. The mobile phone must therefore be nearby, but otherwise there is no difference in output to an integrated GPS.
