Summary:
Seeing is something that needs to be learned! Focus books are to infants what beginner reading books are to children learning the alphabet; they are essentially first-look books. Like almost everything, seeing also requires learning. A person's vision goes through many stages before it matures enough to perceive the environment in all its nuances. For example, a newborn only reacts to light. It takes between one and two weeks for a baby's eyes to follow moving objects. Another two weeks pass before they can focus on objects. It is now known that children divide shapes into light and dark during their first weeks of life. Therefore, they easily respond to clear black-and-white patterns with distinct outlines. Two to three months after birth, color perception begins to develop. More and more, the infant learns to perceive the spectrum of light in a differentiated way and to distinguish the environment by shape and color. However, at this stage, vision is still imperfect. Babies rely more on outlines than on structured surfaces and recognize bright, vivid colors better than soft tones. Particularly bright and sparkling objects capture their attention.

About the Author:
Martin Herbst is a passionate amateur graphic designer, leisure illustrator, and comic artist. He has been dabbling in these fields with great dedication since early childhood. Now a father of two, he is venturing into the public eye with "My First Focus Book" and "What is That?" published by Märchenwald Verlag. He painted the first focus patterns in 2003 for his newborn son on cardboard paper. In his other profession, he manages a team of software developers.
