..i must say i found the gate pretty loud while opening and closing, but this could be because it was not mounted properly - we didnt actually manage to mount it (when it closed it would fall down the stairs, when it was fixed hard enough to the wall it wouldnt close)...so we returned it in the end..

You have to push down the top button, then push up the bottom button (can do easily with one hand) then the gate opens.
