You would probably need a smaller Phillips screwdriver. So that it can grip the screw properly. If that's not the problem, then maybe pre-drill 1, 2 millimetres so that the screw likes through the coating.

If you don't use the wood panel screws, that's fine too.
If not, pre-drill a few mm with a fine drill bit. Or a good punch...
