Product details
In 1939, the Vipp pedal bin embarked on a remarkable journey from Holger Nielsen's metal factory in the small Danish town of Randers to world-renowned design stores and art museums.
It was the year 1939. Holger Nielsen and Marie Axelsen had just gotten married. Marie, a trained hairdresser, wanted to open her own salon. With limited funds, she asked her husband for help in setting up the salon. Among other things, she wanted a practical waste bin. After many days in the workshop, Holger presented Marie with the Vipp pedal bin – and she was thrilled.
The Vipp bin was originally intended only for Marie. However, some of the wives of doctors and dentists in the town were Marie's clients and thought the bin would be perfect for their husbands' practices, not least because it was practical and very robust. Soon, the pedal bin became a staple in Danish practices.
"Good design never goes out of style," Holger used to say. And time proved him right: since its debut in 1939, the Vipp bin has remained nearly unchanged. Today, it is regarded as an international design classic, and in November 2009, it was added to the architecture and design collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
The Vipp pedal bin features a stainless steel lid, a dampening mechanism that allows the lid to close softly and silently, and a rubber ring that ensures an airtight seal. The body is made of powder-coated steel and conceals a removable inner bin made of galvanized steel. A rubber ring beneath the bin protects delicate surfaces.
