The sport version of the Lancia Delta road model - the "HF" 4WD - is an icon of rally vehicles. The Delta HF was produced in the second half of the 1980s and participated in the World Rally Championship from 1987 to 1988, winning two world championship titles and taking first place in numerous races, including the prestigious Monte Carlo and Sanremo rallies.

Its evolution, the Lancia Delta Integrale, continued to compete until 1993, winning five additional world championship titles and solidifying the Italian company's track record in off-road racing. In addition to many aesthetic details that made it more muscular, such as enlarged fenders and new air intakes on the hood, the HF Integrale also saw improvements in technology and engine performance. The output of the 1995 cc turbo engine was increased to 185 hp.

The Lancia Delta Integrale dominated the World Rally Championship in the 1980s and early 1990s, leading many famous drivers like Miki Biasion, Didier Auriol, and Juha Kankkunen to victory.
