The BR 03 was a fast passenger steam locomotive of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, built similarly to the BR 01 but with a lower axle load of 18 tons. Locomotives of this class were constructed between 1930 and 1938 and were originally approved for a maximum speed of 120 km/h. Later, the top speed was increased to 130 km/h. Compared to other locomotive types, these engines had a lower specific steam consumption and a reduced coal consumption for the same output. The weight reduction was achieved through a lighter bar frame, a smaller boiler, and smaller cylinders. By 1959, the Deutsche Bundesbahn still had over 100 of these locomotives in operation, while the Deutsche Reichsbahn in East Germany operated 86 machines.
