It was an armed action by the Polish resistance movement, mainly the Home Army, against the German troops occupying Warsaw. The aim of the uprising was to liberate the capital before the invasion of the Red Army to secure Poland's sovereignty after the war. Despite initial successes, the insurgents were unable to hold their positions against the overpowering German forces and the lack of sufficient help from outside. After 63 days of extremely devastating and fierce fighting, the uprising was crushed. Around 16,000 insurgents and approximately 150,000 to 200,000 civilians died, and the city was almost completely destroyed. To this day, the Warsaw Uprising is a symbol of enormous courage and sacrifice in the name of higher values.
