The ASMP program was launched in 1978 to develop an optimized air-to-ground missile with medium range for the future Mirage 2000N. It was decided to convert 18 Mirage IVA into IVP models, a so-called penetration version capable of carrying the CT52 reconnaissance pod equipped with cameras and infrared heat detectors, until the new bomber was operational. The first operational squadron in Mont-de-Marsan was equipped on May 1, 1986, with the new supersonic missile featuring a nuclear warhead, which can also be fitted with a conventional warhead for use as a deterrent.
