The series of 9 Aviso-Escort ships, including the Victor Schœlcher (the first ship to be commissioned) and the Commandant Rivière, was built between 1957 and 1963. The air-conditioned ships, designed for representation and escorts in various climates, were capable of accommodating high-ranking officials or a senior officer and their staff. For a short period, they could also transport a command of 80 men. A light helicopter could land on the ship.
