Already after the first year of the war, the German Luftwaffe leadership had to recognize that the Junkers Ju 87B no longer met the requirements in many areas. The ever-increasing ground defenses and fighter use during the war led to a task restructuring of the Ju 87 as a battle plane. The D version received a more powerful engine, a new aerodynamic fairing and stronger armour. Its new mission was now primarily ground combat, which included anti-tank operations using a 3.7 cm calibre gun.
