The use of shin guards in Ancient Rome was not consistently applied. In the early Republic, shin guards were part of the standard equipment of the legion and were only tied to the leg that was advanced during combat, depending on the type of weapon. In the Imperial period, both legs were equipped with shin guards, but they were typically worn only by centurions and other officers, primarily serving a decorative purpose. The Livius shin guards are crafted based on the depictions on the famous Trajan's Column in Rome and are forged from the finest steel. They encase the legs on three sides and are laced together at the back using brass rings attached to the sides. A knee plate that moves on hinges provides additional protection for that area.
