9 well-cushioned armchairs for the garden

Welcome to my deep dive, where I delve into our range to find the best of the best in all of our furniture categories. Today’s focus: armchairs for your outdoor space – in all shapes and sizes.

Whether you have a balcony, terrace, or garden, with the right furniture, you can create an outdoor living room. Here are my top picks for those of us who love to relax in the fresh air. From modular systems to standalone pieces, these upholstered armchairs are both comfortable and stylish.

Important to know: the solid pinewood looks great outside, but it requires maintenance to stay stain-free. And it’s best to bring the cushions inside when it rains – they’re not weatherproof.

2. Relaxation in motion

A normal armchair stands still. The Alva rocking chair’s different. Its design invites you to gently rock back and forth – perfect for relaxing. The curved shape and warm wood exude cosiness, while the grey polyester cushion provides extra comfort. On a practical level, tie straps keep the cushion in place, while the galvanised steel screws make the chair stable and durable.

At 40 centimetres, the chair may be a bit low for taller people or those who prefer a higher seat, and could make getting up less comfortable.

3. Minimalist and modular

Venture Home’s modular Copacabana garden lounge collection impresses with clean lines and robust materials. The aluminium frame won’t rust, and the polyester covers are hard-wearing and easy to clean. And the understated colour range from beige to dark grey blends seamlessly into any outdoor space.

But be careful: cover the light-coloured cushions in heavy rain or changeable weather to keep them beautiful for longer.

If you’re not a fan of sitting low down, the design might be a slight drawback. And yes, it does make cleaning around it a bit more awkward, especially if you move it around often.

But there are a few things you should keep in mind. The acacia wood needs care – so don’t forget to oil it regularly. And although the olefin cushions can withstand a lot, you’ll probably want to bring them inside during bad weather.

Depending on the configuration, combining multiple modules can push the price slightly higher. And while the recycled fabric is sustainable, you may notice slight colour variations.

7. A thoroughly edgy look

The Sunbrella fabric cover on Divano’s Coral design is sun, rain, and mould-resistant. And with dyed fibres, the colour doesn’t fade, even in hot weather. As the name suggests, the medium-firm quick dry foam filling dries quickly after a shower. To make sure everything lasts longer, let it all dry thoroughly before winter, protect it with a suitable cover, or just bring it inside.

What might bother you? The angular shape. While it looks good, it makes the armrests more uncomfortable than others.

Of course, quality comes at a price. The Square isn’t exactly cheap, but it’s durable. And if you like things ready-made, combining modules might not be your thing. Prices start at around 700 Swiss francs.

9. Light and breezy – but heavy on the wallet

The Breeze Club lounge chair from Danish brand Cane-line is a perfect blend of wickerwork and upholstery. Its airy design makes it easy to move (it only weighs 8.5 kg!) – perfect for spontaneous makeovers. It also copes well with moisture and heat, and it’s available in three different shades of grey.

At around 875 Swiss francs, the chair’s far from a bargain. Especially as it doesn’t come with a cushion. What’s more, the seat height of 40 centimetres might be a bit too low for some.
