Everything you need to know about "Destiny 2"

"Destiny 2" has finally been released. At least for some of us. Find out which version offers which advantages and what newcomers should know here.

The first "Destiny" was a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the action, the shooting and the team missions were praised. On the other hand, many criticised the lack of scope, the repetitive missions and the practically non-existent story. Part 2 aims to do everything better. If the first impressions that players have gathered over the last few days are to be believed, then developer Bungie seems to have hit the nail on the head this time. Before you see for yourself, here is the most important information.

Three versions, two release dates

Unlike the first instalment, "Destiny 2" will also be released for PC. Hooray for that! But wait. There's a catch. While console gamers have been looting and levelling since 6 September, PC players will have to wait until 24 October. But the wait could be worth it, as a look at the three versions shows.

The most beautiful

Beta testers will agree with me when I say that the PC version looks by far the best: 4K textures, support for 144 Hz and ultrawide monitors. While the console versions are limited to 30 fps, I played the beta at an average of 80 fps at 3440x1440 pixels. Yeah baby!

The most extensive

Unfortunately, it has now become the norm for manufacturers to secure exclusive rights to content or release dates. In the case of Destiny 2, this means that PS4 players are the more privileged players in terms of content for the time being (probably for a year). The Strike mission "Lake of Shadows" is PS4-exclusive. PC and Xbox players will therefore have to make do with five strikes for the time being.

PS4 players will also receive an additional legendary armour set for each class, the exclusive City Apex ship, the exotic Borealis sniper rifle and the multiplayer map Retribution.

The Joker

While the PS4 seems to be the logical choice for console gamers, Microsoft still has a wild card up its sleeve: The Xbox One X. The new console is a step ahead of the PS4 Pro in terms of performance and could offer the better console experience in terms of visuals and performance. However, the Xbox One X will not deliver more than 30 fps, as Bungie has already confirmed.

For newcomers or just veterans?

If you have played the first part, you will find your way around immediately. At first glance, not much has changed. Newcomers will only lack some background knowledge about the story. However, as this did not have any particular significance in the first part, you will quickly be up to date. And as far as the gameplay is concerned, you quickly know what's going on. Bungie has gained enough experience with the "Halo" series to create an intuitive gaming experience.

What's new?

Bungie has endeavoured to pack significantly more story into the new part. Instead of having to read through codex entries on the "Destiny" website, you will now be served a lot more story in the game. The game is played on four different destinations. Earth is the only planet that already existed in the first part. However, you will not be travelling through the same regions there. The three other destinations are Titan, a moon of Saturn, Nessus, a minor planet and Io, a moon of Jupiter.

A real map? Yes, there are still wonders.

To travel from one location to the next, you will no longer have to go into orbit, which was associated with long loading times. Instead, there is now an overview map. If you click on a specific world there, you even get a real map of the current area. Sounds unspectacular, but it didn't exist before. This will also make fast travel possible.

The Sparrow is taken away from you for the time being. The means of transport were standard in the last part. Now it will take a little longer before you can buy one of the fancy speedsters.

Three new subclasses have been added to the existing three classes, Hunter, Titan and Warlock: Sentinel-Titan, Dawnblade-Warlock and Arcus Acrobat-Hunter. Three subclasses are available for each character class. Start with the new ones. You have to unlock the other two.

Weapons in "Destiny 2" are no longer categorised into Primary, Special and Heavy, but rather according to their weapon type and damage output. The three weapon slots are now Kinetic, Energy and Power Weapons. The new grenade launchers, for example, belong in the Power Weapons slot. Weapons can also be customised with modifications.

Multiplayer battles are of course also available again. PC and Xbox players get eight Crucible maps, while PS4 players get nine. There are two new modes on top: Countdown and Survival.

Is there enough content this time?

The popular Strike missions, which can be played by three players, are still few and far between. However, there is now much more to do: More missions, more side quests, more story. The first raid, a mission for six players, is called "Leviathan" and will be revealed on 13 September.

What do you think? Are you already playing it? Are you waiting for the PC version? Or is "Destiny 2" not your cup of tea?

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
