Fujifilm X-H2: 40 megapixels and 8K video

The new camera offers exceptionally high resolution and also exploits this in videos.

For classification: Fujifilm does not use full-frame sensors, but the smaller APS-C format. The resolutions are therefore generally lower. 40 megapixels for the APS-C format is record-breaking. And 8K video is only mastered by a few cameras anyway.

The X-H2S, already released in the summer, is trimmed for speed and has a moderate resolution of 26 megapixels; the X-H2 is optimised for detail. But that doesn't mean it can only be used for static scenes.

The autofocus detects not only people but also animals, including birds, cars, motorbikes, bicycles, planes and trains. Since 8K videos require particularly precise focusing, Fujifilm has also optimised the video AF algorithm. The camera manages 15 continuous frames per second with a mechanical shutter and 20 with an electronic one - but then with a crop.

According to Fujifilm, the electronic shutter allows an ultra-short exposure time of 1/180 000 seconds. I have no idea what that's for - possibly it's an indication that the sensor's readout time is fast, which would prevent rolling shutter effects.

The camera has two card slots, one in SD format and one for CFexpress Type B. The battery life is 680 photos according to CIPA standards, which is a very good value.

The Fujifilm X-H2 is expected to be available from the end of September. It is available without a lens or together with the 16-80mm. Optional accessories include a battery grip and a cooling fan.
