Motorola Defy: Moto presents rugged phone with triple camera

Motorola launches a rugged phone. The Motorola Defy is built by the Bullitt Group and seems perfect for open airs.
Motorola unveiled its newest smartphone today and leaves behind its thinner, lighter, faster slogan. Because the motorola defy – spelled «motorola defy» by Motorola itself – is a rugged phone. The engineering stems from the Bullitt Group, the driving force behind the Cat Phones and the Land Rover Rugged Phone.
So logically: Motorola will be indestructible. As an attentive chronicler, I’m excited about it.
Perfect phone for an open air
Cat Phones were created for construction sites, sometimes with built-in infrared cameras or air-quality sensors. But Bullitt Group has a different goal for the defy. It takes paths unknown between lifestyle and indestructibility.
It’s designed beyond just a brute aesthetic. There’s a triple-camera setup with a 5000 mAh battery. The installed Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 system-on-a-chip (SoC) is supposed to run for two days. This is accompanied by 4 GB of RAM.

In addition, the promised rugged features:
- Fall-proof from a height of 180 cm
- IP68 waterproof
- Survives 35 minutes under 150 cm of water
- Dust-proof
- Withstands temperatures from -25 degrees to +55 degrees
- Can be washed with soap and disinfectants
When comparing all of its licensees, Bullitt Group historically only makes a new smartphone when it can add something to the market. In the case of the defy, it’s a cord on the lower right corner of the phone. It helps to attach the phone to your backpack or belt. This gives the defy a rather unusual, asymmetrical shape.
So we have two days of battery runtime, dust and waterproof, easily washable and a cord. Sounds perfect for open airs should they ever happen again.
Not the first defy
Attentive chroniclers will remember the name. After all, the motorola defy isn’t the first device with the name Defy to be released on the market. Motorola already had a Defy in 2010.
This was followed by a Defy+ in 2011. And funnily enough, digitec still has replacement batteries on offer. So FYI.
The new Motorola Defy will be available «in the coming weeks» and costs 329 Euros in the neighbouring countries up north. No details have been announced yet regarding its launch in Switzerland.
