The Grit X2 does away with gimmicks. Polar promises a compact, robust smartwatch with map and ECG functions as well as support for global satellite systems for positioning and navigation.

Do you spend a lot of time outdoors, train regularly and want to record your performance precisely? Our shop novelty, the Grit X2 from Polar, is not only designed to help you record your training data. It also supports map display. The smartwatch is available as an entry-level version in the colours black and brown. The Pro version has been on the market for some time. My colleague Siri has already exhaustively tested it.

Case and display

According to the manufacturer, the Grit X2 stands out with its compact and robust design. It measures 45 millimetres in diameter, is 12.5 millimetres flat and weighs 62 grams with the strap. The case consists of a stainless steel frame and the bezel is engraved with a compass. The watch complies with military standard MIL-STD-810H and is water-resistant to 50 metres. According to the manufacturer, it can withstand temperatures from minus 20 to plus 50 degrees Celsius.

The built-in AMOLED display measures 1.28 inches and offers a resolution of 416 × 416 pixels. It is operated via the touchscreen and five buttons on the side. Dashboards and widgets can be freely configured. The display is protected by scratch-resistant sapphire glass.

Navigation

The Grit X2 uses dual-frequency GPS with L1 and L5 frequencies to determine its position. This enables significantly more accurate and interference-resistant positioning than conventional single-frequency GPS systems. While classic GPS receivers with only one frequency (usually L1) typically achieve an accuracy of around 2.5 metres, dual-frequency GPS can improve accuracy to up to 0.5 metres.

Offline maps can be saved directly on the watch. They can be used without a mobile phone connection. You can also define points of interest and use planned routes. Functions such as Hill Splitter, 3D Speed and Vertical Speed analyse precise ascents and descents. The watch shows a real-time altitude profile of the route, supplemented by an altimeter, barometer and compass.

Sensor technology

The smartwatch uses Polar's own Elixir biosensor system. It measures the heart rate on the wrist around the clock. The watch can also be used to take ECG measurements directly on the wrist. An integrated SpO₂ sensor determines the oxygen content in the blood. The night-time skin temperature is also continuously recorded, analysed and compared with an individual 28-day average. Heart rate variability is also monitored.

At night, the «Sleep Plus Stages» function on the Grit X2 automatically recognises sleep phases. It evaluates the duration and quality of sleep and calculates a sleep score. «Nightly Recharge» shows you the next morning how well your body has recovered during the night. The «SleepWise» function predicts how your sleep quality will affect your daily form and when you will be at your most productive.

Battery life

The battery life of the Grit X2 varies depending on use: according to the manufacturer, up to 30 hours are possible in GPS-supported performance mode and up to 90 hours in eco mode. In smartwatch mode without GPS, the battery lasts a maximum of seven days. A 310 mAh lithium polymer battery is used, which is charged via the supplied USB-C charging cable (Polar Charge 2.0).
