Old and new drone compared in detail

Potensic divided its first drone series into the standard version «Atom» with the best camera equipment, the «Atom SE» with a slightly slimmed-down camera and the «Atom LT», which also makes compromises in terms of the camera, but has a slightly longer flight time.

The housing, flight and gimbal characteristics of the new «Atom 2» are identical to those of the «Atom». Ready to fly and including micro SD card, it weighs less than 249 grams. When folded, it measures 88 × 143 × 58 millimetres. It can withstand wind speeds of up to 38 km/h. The «Atom 2» operates at temperatures between 0 and 40 degrees Celsius. The maximum flight time with one battery is 32 minutes.

The highlight: a better camera

However, there are major differences in the camera. At ½ inch, the «Atom 2» has a larger CMOS sensor (compared to ⅓ inch on the «Atom») and has a resolution of 48 megapixels (vs. 12 megapixels). The aperture is slightly larger at F1.8 compared to F2.2, which enables better photos in low light conditions.

It records videos in up to 4K, photos in up to 8K (vs. 4K). What is new is that in most resolutions there is a choice of formats other than just 16:9 as with its predecessor. In 2.7K and Full HD video mode, 4:3 and 9:16 formats are also possible. In addition, it can record up to five times slow motion in Full HD - slow motion is not possible with the «Atom». The maximum video bit rate is 80 megabits per second (vs. 50 Mbps).

The «Atom 2» also supports HDR and offers photo modes such as burst shooting (up to seven frames), panoramic shots at 180 degrees and an interval timer. The drone uses this to take photos at intervals of two to 30 seconds.

With the help of AI, the drone should be able to track the subject better and thus carry out parallel flights. It also supports the new Dolly Zoom flight mode, which you may be familiar with from films and television: This involves the drone moving backwards and zooming forwards at the same time. This makes it look as if the background is moving closer and the subject is moving away. Of course, this also works the other way round.

The «Atom 2» sends its live image to your mobile device in full HD (vs. 720p).

Even the remote control goes further

The «Atom 2» comes with a new remote control, the DSRC23A («Atom»: DSRC02A). At ten kilometres, it has a four-kilometre longer range. The battery capacity is 18.7 Wh compared to 11.1 Wh for the old remote control. This means it should last for four hours. It can also be charged quickly with up to 18 watts. The batteries in the «Atom 2» are the same as in the previous model.
