Paediatricians warn against these styling devices
Time and again, young children burn themselves on hair styling appliances. The German Association of Paediatricians therefore warns against using them carelessly.
Accidents can occur if the appliance is left unattended or left on the floor to cool down, for example. This is because a lot of heat is needed to straighten hair. Some straighteners heat up to 230 degrees within a very short time. The Berufsverband der Kinder- und Jugendärzte (BVKJ) therefore advises that curling irons and hair straighteners should always be kept out of the reach of children.
What you need to watch out for
If you have kids and still want a styling tool like this, you should look out for certain features when buying. You can often buy a so-called heart-shaped bag with the product, in which it can cool down safely. An automatic switch-off function is also advisable: the appliance recognises that it has not been used for a long time and switches itself off automatically. It is also useful if the housing and handles do not heat up as well.
I asked my colleagues in Category Management: The appliance manufacturer Dyson is particularly popular on Galaxus. When asked about child safety, Joshua Cano Urbanke, Key Account Manager at Dyson, says: "I recommend the Airwrap." Unlike conventional curling irons, this does not use heating plates, but dries the hair with heated air. The air temperature is measured up to 40 times per second, ensuring that the temperature does not exceed 150 degrees.
When it does happen
Of course, accidents can never be completely avoided. If, despite all precautions, your child touches the hot appliance, the professional medical association recommends the following: First run lukewarm water over the area for ten to 15 minutes, then cover it with a wound dressing. However, if the wound is deeper than just superficial, you must take your child to the doctor.
