There’s something in the air. Or rather, on the floor. Namely, round rugs. For me, they’re currently stealing the show from their square counterparts. Just as with garden furniture, curves simply work better outdoors than sharp edges.
Pebbles, lawns, petals – and now my rug too: none of them follow straight lines. Only the outdoor rug next to it does – so far. When it comes to garden furniture, I fell in love with curves ages ago; now rugs are following suit. And here’s why:
What round rugs do better outdoors
- They don’t look out of place, and outdoors that’s worth more than any designer label. A rectangle on grass or gravel quickly looks as though it’s just been plonked there, whereas a round rug blends in, almost as if it had grown there rather than been laid down.
- They balance out the straight lines around them. House walls, fences and paving slabs are almost always angular anyway; a round rug provides the perfect counterpoint.
- They make the furniture arrangement feel more relaxed. Without four fixed corners, you automatically arrange lounge furniture, side tables and plants in a more relaxed way, closer to how things look outdoors anyway.

- They’re timeless rather than trendy. A circular shape isn’t tied to any particular season and will look just as good in five years’ time as it does today.
- They’re suitable for outdoor use. The new models are weatherproof and UV-resistant; many can even be cleaned with a garden hose.
My picks
For anyone who favours sustainability, my pick is the «Hochwald» from Atelier Pfister. It’s made from recycled PET and carries the STEP certificate for fair production, yet it still holds its own outdoors with ease. Sturdy, easy to care for – and one I could well see myself using indoors too.

For the terrace, I’ve chosen the «Circle Rug» by Cane-line. It’s flat-woven, feels pleasant under bare feet on hot summer days and is easy to clean with lukewarm water and a brush. It’s also UV-resistant, antibacterial and hypoallergenic, so I don’t have to worry about this piece at all.
If you’re looking for a warm, organic feel, my third choice is the ‘ «’ Eternal» jute rug from Ferm Living. Jute is durable and biodegradable. It brings exactly the natural feel to a covered balcony or terrace that I’m looking for.

Not a trend, but the logical next step
Curves simply work better outdoors than sharp edges. If you’ve already opted for rounded garden furniture, you’re not suddenly going to stop at the flooring. And let’s be honest, you’re bound to trip over a corner.
