ROG Phone 6D Ultimate: Gaming smartphone with extra ventilation opening unveiled

With the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate, Asus now offers you a choice between Mediatek and Qualcomm processors for its flagship gaming device. It also has a flap that can open for a larger air intake for cooling.

The D stands for Dimensity

The ROG Phone 6D is said to have ten percent more CPU power with the Mediatek Dimensity 9000+ than the ROG Phone 6 with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, according to Asus. Mediatek's chipset is clocked at 3.35 gigahertz, slightly higher than its standard version. It is allegedly not overclocked. Asus only announced nebulously that they had used "some magic". In addition, there would be an "X Mode performace boost" exclusive to the ROG Phones.

The up to 16 gigabytes of memory in the LPDDR5X standard would have 15 per cent less latency and 17 per cent more bandwidth compared to LPDDR5. All that's missing now are the games that exploit this power. Storage space would be ample with up to 512 gigabytes on the ROG Phone 6D.

Aeroactive Portal: An opening for more air

The passive internal cooling system with cooling chamber and thermal layers of the ROG Phone 6D is identical to those of the 6-phone. Asus continues to do without fans as in the RedMagic 7S Pro or Legion Y90. However, the manufacturer recommends using the external "Aeroactive Cooler" when playing for more than an hour. It is included in the scope of delivery of the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate.

This makes sense because this variant of the gaming smartphone has an extra opening with the "Aeroactive Portal". In combination with the Aeroactive Cooler, this allows even more air to cool the smartphone. Asus has measured up to three degrees lower temperatures at high performance compared to the ROG Phone 6.

Even with the portal open, the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate has splash protection. Should the smartphone fall, the opening would close automatically and for cleaning you could open it in Cleaning Mode even without the cooler attached.

The rest of the features include a waterproof portal.

The rest of the features are identical to the ROG Phone 6. This includes a 6000 mAh battery, shoulder buttons (AirTrigger), two USB ports, a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with up to 165 hertz, a 50-megapixel main camera and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera, as well as Android 12 with the ROG UI.

Asus plans to start shipping the ROG Phone 6D (Ultimate) in October. The recommended retail price is 1399 euros for the Ultimate version and 949 euros for the standard variant.
