Nomination Game of the Year 2020
by Ramon Schneider
The jury has decided: The Board Game Award for Children's Game of the Year 2020 goes to Speedy Roll. A colourful game of skill from the Viennese games publisher Piatnik.
Speedy Roll. The game penned by Urtis Sulinskas beat the other two nominees "Foto Fish" and "We are the Robots" to win the Children's Game of the Year 2020. The nominated games from all categories were announced a month ago. You can find out who made it onto the shortlist here:
The hedgehog is the main character in the game and consists of a ball with a Velcro fastener. He needs your help to collect apples, leaves and mushrooms. To do this, you roll him skilfully over the forest sections and try to get as far as possible on your way home. In Speedy Roll, you can compete against your fellow player or take on the fox together as a team. You can find the detailed game instructions here
Why did Speedy Roll win out over the other nominees? The jury gave the following reasoning: "Many things have been rolled in children's games. Marbles, balls, logs, but until now there hasn't been a tennis ball. The idea of claiming it as a hedgehog with Velcro-covered apples, mushrooms and leaves stuck to its felty spines is special in itself. But combining all of this with a race in which the hedgehog actually rolls across the table and the spiked objects determine the distance travelled is what makes Speedy Roll so appealing. Whether cooperatively or against each other, every game tells an exciting story."
In addition to the Children's Game of the Year, the jury also presents the "Game of the Year" and "Connoisseur Game of the Year" awards. The nominations have already been made and the winners will be announced on 20 July. <p
