The Omron M3 Comfort does without unnecessary functions, but scores points in this review for intuitive operation, user-friendliness and including special technology to improve measurement accuracy.

According to the WHO, more than one billion people worldwide suffer from high blood pressure – many of them without realising it. However, if high blood pressure remains untreated, this significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Home blood pressure monitors make it easy to keep an eye on your own blood pressure. That’s why the device should provide accurate values and be easy to use. I’ve tested the M3 Comfort from Omron and will reveal here whether it meets these requirements.

If you’d like to know more about what you should look out for when measuring your blood pressure and why upper arm monitors are preferable to wrist monitors, you can find out more here:

How arm position can affect your blood pressure reading

What can the Omron M3 Comfort do?

The Omron M3 Comfort is a blood pressure monitor for the upper arm that you can easily use at home. It’s been clinically tested and bears the seal of approval of the «Deutschen Hochdruckliga» (German Hypertension League) – this indicates a high level of measurement accuracy. The special feature of the M3 Comfort is the so-called Intelli Wrap sleeve. It has an enlarged measuring zone that covers the entire circumference of the upper arm and, according to Omron, measures equally reliably at every point. This means you don’t have to worry about accidentally putting the sleeve on incorrectly and the chance of reading errors should be reduced as a result. I actually found it very easy to put on the sleeve during the test. The fact that I didn’t have to worry about the right position is definitely a plus.

How easy is it to operate?

I’m definitely not a fan of long instruction manuals and unnecessary functional bells and whistles. That’s why the M3 Comfort is perfect for me, because you can operate it intuitively, without much reading. You can start or stop the measurement with just one start/stop button. And there’s a slider to select which user profile’s currently having the reading. There are two user profiles with space for 60 readings each. The device saves the values automatically – it takes just one press of a button to receive them. If you press and hold the memory button with the note symbol, the device will show you the average value of your previous measurements. There’s a separate mode for guests so that the stored values aren’t falsified. Power is supplied by four AA batteries, which are included in the packaging.

How clear are the instructions?

The operating instructions are very concise. I prefer this usually, but unfortunately a few things that went beyond the basic functions were still unclear. The basic functions are explained, but nothing more. Specific questions such as how to delete individual readings or what happens when the memory’s full aren’t answered directly. There’s more product data and FAQs on the Omron website, but they don’t answer everything. A little more information would be beneficial here, especially for people who are using the device for the first time.

How comfortable is the sleeve?

The Intelli Wrap sleeve is pre-shaped and easily applied to the upper arm. It has a circumference range from 22 to 42 cm. It sits securely, but doesn’t dig in even when inflated. This makes the reading relatively comfortable, even if the sleeve’s really tight when inflating. The sleeve fit check shows you whether it fits correctly. I never had any problems with this in any of my runs.

How quickly and accurately does the device measure?

The reading takes about 35 seconds – from pressing the start button to displaying the result. During the reading, the device detects irregular heartbeats. Even if you move too much during the reading, the device recognises this and alerts you.

I was unable to check how accurate the measurements were in the small test I did. The values to use to check this are ± 3 mmHg for the blood pressure and ± 5 per cent for the pulse measurement, which is the usual range for reading accuracy. The comparisons I made with readings from other devices also suggests that it measures correctly. What’s more important is the fact that the M3 Comfort has been clinically tested and meets the standards of the European Society of Hypertension. This should ensure reliable and accurate readings.

How well can you read the display?

The display’s clearly laid out. It shows you the three most important values large and clearly: systolic and diastolic blood pressure and pulse rate. Additional symbols indicate how well the sleeve sits and inform you of irregular heartbeats or high blood pressure values.

Everything at a glance: the display is clear and easy to read.

Does it come with an app or additional functions?

The M3 Comfort has no USB or Bluetooth interface and no app, so data’s stored exclusively on the device. As this concerns sensitive health data, the simple, privacy-friendly use is definitely a plus for me. However, if you want to document and evaluate your values digitally, the M3 Comfort isn’t for you.

What about customer service and warranty?

Omron’s device has a three year warranty. In the case of a warranty claim, the manufacturer will offer a repair or an exchange. Plus, it comes with a voucher for a free calibration check so that you can be sure the device still measures correctly in the future.

Can you use the device on the go?

With a weight of around 500 grammes and a compact storage bag, the Omron M3 Comfort is easy to transport. So you can take a reliable blood pressure reading when you’re out and about.

Note: A blood pressure monitor isn’t a substitute for medical treatment. If you’re unsure or have an abnormal value, you should always contact medical professional or your doctor.

In a nutshell

Precise, user-friendly blood pressure monitor that can be operated intuitively

The Omron M3 Comfort is a reliable, clear and easy-to-use blood pressure monitor. The Intelli Wrap sleeve and simple operation make it a good choice for anyone – even those without experience – who wants to check their blood pressure regularly. If you can do without app functions and other additional functions and prefer uncomplicated handling, this device is the right choice for you.
