The backpack feels very solid, but it also weighs 1.7 kilos as a result. That is why I would rather use it for commuting, in everyday life, and when traveling. It is too heavy for me for hiking and trekking tours. The Ranchero is also available in a 22-liter version weighing just under 1.5 kilos with slightly modified features.
Zippers offer a deep insight
Naturally, the first thing I do is open the three zippers to the main compartment. Clever, I think. Thanks to the large opening on the front, I can look directly into the main compartment. Things that are at the very bottom appear without a long search.
This is particularly practical when I store sports shoes and clothes at the bottom and a notebook, spare batteries, and a camera for work above them. At the gym, I can then get to my outfit quickly and without rummaging around.
If I just want to quickly stow a jacket, the two upper zippers are sufficient. Then the backpack becomes a top-loader.
If you are thinking now: «Wait a minute, that design looks familiar», then you are right. The three zippers are already featured on the Scree backpack from the manufacturer Mystery Ranch. Yeti acquired them some time ago. And with them, the zipper concept as well.
Many pockets for good organization
In addition to the main compartment, the backpack has a padded laptop compartment that can also fit a tablet.
For charging cables, power banks, lip balm, snacks, and whatever else you carry with you daily, there are five small pockets inside the backpack, three of which have zippers. I like to organize my small items, so the interior layout works for me.
My favorite pocket, however, is the one in the lid. I can reach my smartphone, headphones, and energy bar without opening the main compartment. A strap with a clip for keys is also integrated.
On the outside, there are two slightly stretchy pockets to tuck in a water bottle, umbrella, or a mini tripod. However, the bottle shouldn't be too wide, otherwise it gets tight when the backpack is fully packed.
Stable and water-repellent
If you use the Ranchero for commuting on your bike, you don't need to worry too much about light rain showers. The outer material is water-repellent and the zippers are coated. For really heavy rain, I would have wished for a rain cover. It would also protect against dirt splashes while cycling.
Besides the zippers, the backpack has another striking feature: its stability. The bottom is reinforced with a removable plastic plate. This means it stands really securely, even on a moving train. The plate gives the backpack stability. When I have my camera with me, I appreciate the additional protection.
Abrasion-resistant outer material and solid carrying system
The outer material consists of a special nylon fabric called Tuffskin. It is durable, I can confirm that. The backpack survived an accidental scrape against a rough house wall without any scratches.
Thanks to the firmly sewn, padded straps and the back plate, the backpack sits comfortably when worn. However, there is no ventilation system, which leads to unpleasant sweating on the back.
Who is the Yeti Ranchero suitable for?
The question of who and which scenarios the backpack is particularly well-suited for keeps coming up for me. According to the product description, it is supposed to be made for outdoor adventures. But for that, it is too heavy and too bulky for me. Furthermore, features like a helmet or rope attachment are missing.
Visually, I also see the Ranchero more at the airport, on the train, or in the office than in the mountains or on the beach. Although I have spotted it in a surf shop in Portugal and a wakeboard shop in Austria.
I would rather take the backpack for commuting or traveling. But even here, it is almost a bit too bulky for me for the limited interior space it offers. And the muted colors don't exactly knock my socks off.

A sturdy backpack for commuting and traveling
Yeti's 27-liter Ranchero has a lot going for it: it's sturdy, durable, has plenty of interior pockets, and a practical zipper system. It's well-suited for commuting to work and for travel, which is why I give it four stars. Nevertheless, it didn't quite win my heart. Perhaps it's the muted colors and the understated look combined with the weight. For the price, I simply expected a bit more: that it would be lighter or have a cool, surprising feature that would blow me away.
