This XXL hair clip tames even long hair

The search for a suitable claw clip for full, long hair is a hair-raising affair. I've finally found one - and I'm happy to share my discovery with you.

Finding a suitable hair clip is a real test of patience for people with full, long hair. I know from painstaking experience. The largest model in the shop is usually only able to grip half of my head of hair.

Even among the 800 hair clips in the Galaxus shop, very few of them look as if they would be a match for my full head of hair. Two models that are even explicitly advertised for thick, long hair were disappointing when tested - more on that later. But at least one model actually proved capable of doing the hardest work.

The best XXL clip for full hair

For comparison: I have relatively straight, thick and very full hair that reaches to the centre of my chest. In everyday life, I like to twist it into a kind of messy French twist and secure the whole thing with a large clip. This feels less heavy than a traditional bun and, unlike hairstyles with hair ties, doesn't leave any unsightly kinks in the hair.

The XXL clip in this set of three from Kitsch «for twisting up and securing long, thick hair all day long» delivers what it promises in the truest sense of the word. The opening of the claw clip, around 12.5 centimetres long and 4.5 centimetres high, can hold a lot of hair thanks to its generous dimensions and also clamp it reliably.

The tortoiseshell pattern goes with many hair colours.

In my case, the claw is filled to the maximum and can just about hook onto the mop of hair. But once properly attached, it actually lasts for several hours. The matt surface with tortoiseshell pattern not only looks pretty, but also has an anti-slip effect.

Robust and inexpensive too

Hair clips often tend to break easily. However, the Kitsch model seems very sturdy to me so far. Even though it really reaches its limits with my hair. In the almost three months that I have been testing the clip made from recycled plastic, it has also survived numerous falls.

I think the price of just under 18 francs for the whole set is almost a gift - especially as I also use the other two sizes regularly. If you can't find a use for the smaller models or prefer a lighter-coloured design, you can alternatively opt for this jumbo clip from the same brand:

The clip is slightly shorter and has a smooth surface, but works almost as well for me. However, you won't save any money - it's the same price as the set of three.

These hair clips don't keep their promise

So, now for the two models that are no good for my hair

The Invisibobble clip is supposed to be explicitly suitable for thick, long hair and also for curls. I found it to be pretty useless as it barely had any grip on my hair and the opening is too small for my needs. Again, it looks too big for me to put only half of my hair up.

The dark beige, « oversized» clip in this set of three from Kitsch is also supposed to be «suitable for pinning up and securing long, thick hair all day». I think that's almost a cheeky claim. Although the clip is long, the opening is very narrow - contrary to what is advertised, the part can't even come close to gripping my hair.

There's much less room for hair in the beige clip.

Pay attention to these details

Basically, staples that have dense prongs and an opening of at least 12 centimetres long and four centimetres wide work for me. It's a shame that so few hair clips on the market meet these requirements

Of course, sometimes only half or a quarter of the mane needs to be pinned up and for many hair types, the conventional models may work well. But I know plenty of people like me whose hair goes beyond the dimensions of conventional clips. So: more diversity in hair clips, please!

In a nutshell

Good and favourable

The XXL claw clip from this set of three from Kitsch is one of the few that reliably holds my full, chest-length hair up for several hours. In my opinion, an absolute must-have for people with voluminous, long hair. The fact that two more useful hair clips are included for the affordable price of just under 18 francs is a nice bonus.
