Product details
In 2015, the genocide of the Armenians of the Ottoman Empire marks its 100th anniversary. In 1915/16, the Ottoman leadership rid itself of its Christian Armenian subjects, whom it broadly accused of collaborating with the enemy, Russia. The events began with the arrest and subsequent murder of the intellectual and political elite of the Ottoman Armenians on the evening of April 24, 1915, in Constantinople - this date has since been commemorated by Armenians around the world as a day of remembrance for this crime of the century. Following this, events unfolded in a predictable pattern: able-bodied Armenian men were conscripted into labor battalions and subsequently murdered. Women, the elderly, and children were left behind. They were sent on a death march to the Syrian desert. Periodic massacres and attacks significantly reduced the deportation trains along the way.
