The EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM features an optical image stabilizer (IS) and is constructed with fluorite and Super-UD glass to extensively eliminate distortion and aberrations. Its internal focusing with sliding elements (floating system) ensures superior image sharpness throughout the autofocus working range. The lens is compatible with the EF 1.4x II and EF 2x II extenders.

This lens includes a three-stop image stabilizer, making it ideal for handheld shooting. It allows for up to three stops slower shutter speeds than normally possible without increasing the risk of camera shake. The lens recognizes movement in a certain direction as panning, automatically turning off the image stabilizer for that direction.

A ring-shaped ultrasonic motor ensures very fast and extremely quiet focusing, while excellent holding torque helps avoid inaccuracies. Manual focusing is always possible without switching off the autofocus function, allowing for adjustments without interruption.

High contrast, low distortion, and consistent resolution from the center of the image to the edge are evident throughout the zoom range. The circular aperture, which is electromagnetically controlled, softens and evens out the background, making the foreground subject stand out more against the attractive background blur.
