The Brothers Grimm referred to themselves as the linguists and folklorists Jacob Grimm (1785-1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859) in their joint publications, such as their world-famous Children's and Household Tales. The brothers originally collected fairy tales from their circle of acquaintances and from literary works at the suggestion of the Romantics Clemens Brentano, Achim von Arnim, and Johann Friedrich Reichardt for their folk song collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn starting in 1806. They were not originally intended solely for children but arose primarily from folkloric interest and received corresponding fairy tale commentary. Wilhelm Grimm's linguistic revisions created a literary fairy tale style that continues to shape the image of fairy tales today.
