LWL = TOSLINK is a standardized optical waveguide connection system for optical signal transmissions in the range of up to about 20 Mbps. It has become widespread through its use in the digital transmission of audio signals in consumer products, where it is used, for example, for transmission between components such as CD and DVD players and audio amplifiers. It uses a fiber optic cable (FOC) made of transparent plastic (PMMA or polycarbonate, POF for short) with a core diameter of 1mm. The large diameter allows the radiation from light-emitting diodes to be coupled in with a focusing lens molded onto them - no laser diodes are required. POF have a smaller bending radius for the same diameter, but higher attenuation than glass FO, so the ranges are limited to up to about 100 meters, practically to about 10 meters. The advantage of a fiber optic connection in audio technology is that it achieves potential separation of the device components.
