Product details

The fifteen-year-old Jewish high school student Gabor Kolozs finds himself in the crosshairs of opposing worldviews in 1950s Hungary. Two teachers, one a staunch communist and the other a devout Catholic, try to steer him onto the "right path." Gabor's father is physically and emotionally broken from his experiences in the Mauthausen concentration camp, while his mother works as a seamstress, struggling to provide for the small family. The boy believes in God and does not want to deny his Jewish heritage. He increasingly searches for proof of God's existence, but his naive attempts to strike a deal with God fail miserably, until an experience during a May Day rally opens his eyes. György Dalos sensitively and convincingly portrays the characters of the protagonists, bringing the atmosphere of the time of communist restoration to life.
