Product details

Towards the end of the 18th century, a self-assured bourgeoisie emerged alongside the nobility, deriving its status not from birth but from its own achievements, whether economic, artistic, or scientific. This newly forming class of wealthy bourgeoisie modeled its lifestyle on the behaviors of the nobility and sought to blur the existing class distinctions by adopting coats of arms. Often, the goal of ennoblement was also pursued. Hermann Jacob Tyroff, who recognized this, undertook a heraldic book in 1783 that was to exclusively feature bourgeois coats of arms. The title page, with its symbols, indicates the social groups the publisher intended to address. Unfortunately, his early death prevented its completion.
