The old remote control is not compatible, and probably won't be with updates.
Your options are to look for an app on your smartphone, certain smartwatches (e.g. samsung gear sport, I read), or the new remote.

Auf der GoPro-Seite ist die Max nicht als kompatibel gelistet;
Bei einer Suche im Web (nach ganz as anderem) hab ich aber das hier gefunden:
I managed to connect my remote to the max and it controls everything apart fro switching between hero mode and 360 mode.
I had to connect the max to the gopro app on my phone first then put the remote into pairing mode and then select connect to new remote on the app, and then select use current remote on the app and then about 10 secs later it connected. It doesn't tell you its connected on the max it only shows information on the remote screen

This means that the remote control is compatible.

The manual for the Smart Remote states:
"You can pair the Smart Remote with any wireless-enabled GoPro."
Since the Hero 7 Silver has wireless, this must also work!
Yes, Camforpro has a mount for the Smart Remote. It fits on motorbike and bicycle handlebars.

no, you can't. but with the remote control, the gopro is easy to operate even with gloves on.

No, I don't, nor do I have a Hero 9. So far, I still use the 6, which is sufficient for my application. But I am satisfied with the remote control, even after so many years.

HERO7 Black

HERO6 Black
HERO5 Black
HERO5 Session
HERO8 Black
MAX
This info can be found somewhat hidden on the official Gopro site.

Hello Steinergcp, this kit is not suitable for mounting the remote control on a handlebar. Mounting brackets with adhesive pads for straight and slightly curved surfaces are supplied.
