The first impression surprised me. The lens works well in combination with the R7. Since the APS-C sensor does not cover the full image circle of the lens, the edge blur is less pronounced than with full-frame. I will take more test shots with the R7 but also with the EOS R and get back to you with a conclusion.
My conclusion after a short test at the zoo: The lens performs amazingly well on the APS-C (R7) but also on the full format (R). At 400 mm focal length, the sharpness decreases somewhat. Unfortunately, some sharpness is lost by adjusting the images on digitec. The result is still a good deal sharper than pictured here. Thanks to the built-in image stabiliser and the IBIS of the R7, images can be realised at a focal length of 400 mm with an exposure time of up to 1/40 second. Depending on the situation, CA's can be disturbing, but can be eliminated by image processing. Because of the small open aperture, subjects can only be cropped to a limited extent. The autofocus has difficulty focusing correctly at maximum focal length and in low light and starts to "pump" in certain situations (can possibly be reduced with the corresponding settings in the AF menu). Certainly recommended as an "always on" and "fair weather" lens for hiking and as a travel lens in general.

I was tempted to buy the excellent RF 100-500 but it weighs 2.2 times as much as this lens and is 30% longer. In the end I decided that to spend four times the amount for something which would probably be in a cupboard when I needed it made no sense.
I received the 100-400 last week and have made a series of test shots comparing it to an EF 70-200 F4 L (with and without a doubler) and taken photos of my grandchildren playing football in the garden. The results are excellent. Perhaps not as razor-sharp as an L lens, but very good none-the-less, and indistinguishable after processing. People who mainly photograph small birds will want something longer, and if you supply copy to glossy magazines maybe the 100-500 would be necessary, but for everybody else, this is a great option.

I got the lens without great expectations and was somewhat skeptical because of the weak light intensity. However, this skepticism has quickly evaporated after the first images. The dimensions are incredibly compact and the lens feels very valuable.

Super zoom for little money. Very light and compact. Image quality is good for the price. Sharpness at 100mm and "open aperture" not the very best, but more than okay and not problematic. At a slightly higher zoom level, very sharp for the price. Also good image stabilisation, advantageous with e.g. R8 or R10 that does not have IBIS. With e.g. an R5 or R6 Mk II together with IBIS simply unstoppable. Unfortunately not very open aperture, so not exactly fast. If it is not very bright (indoors, very cloudy, ...), you either have to expose longer (subject moves --> out of focus, camera shakes --> out of focus) or turn up the light sensitivity of the sensor and have more image noise. If you want a fast zoom, you are choosing the wrong lens. If you don't care about the speed and just want a wide telephoto zoom, this is the right lens for you.

This lens on my EOS R7 delivers very good sharp images. As it is very light, you can carry it around with the camera for a whole day without any problems. The price is very attractive. The very good image stabiliser (5.5 steps) allows you to shoot handheld very often.

It's a cheap lens (ok relative to other RF lenses available), feels ok, not as solid as a L lens, but its less than a 1/3 of the price for them.
Quality is fine for what it is, as long as you know what you are expecting then its a great lens. Don't expect low light accuracy, it's not a 2.8L.
defiantly worth the money in the current line-up of RF mount lenses.
